Student Discounts

During my first year at Uni I found that the word 'discount' meant so much more to me then it did before! There are so many websites, cards and discount schemes available to students that it can be hard to decide which ones are worth signing up for. Soooo, I thought I'd share some of my discoveries with you :)

This one only really applies if you live and study in London but if you do it's a must have. It costs just £10 to sign up and you can do it all over the Internet and it will be valid for three years as long as you continue studying. The 18+ Student Oyster card gives you 30% off adult monthly travel cards and bus passes. For me, my monthly Zones 1-3 travel card costs £98.70 a month instead of the £141.40 it would cost on a standard adult oyster card. Great savings!

This is another card which offers discount on travel but is not only restricted to London students. If you have to get the train to and from Uni in-between semesters or you're like me and have friends at Uni far away or even family then this card is good for you. It costs £30 for one year or £70 for 3 years and saves you a third off those horrible train fares. All you have to do is enter your membership number into the promo code box of the majority of train ticket websites, I usually use Red Spotted Hanky as their website is easy to use and they don't have any booking fees!
An additional benefit of the 16-25 rail card is that you can link it to your 18+ student oyster card and it gives you 33% off Day off-peak travel cards.

If you're like me and more likely to buy things online then in-store then this is the site for you. Its absolutely FREE to sign up and they verify your student status by asking you to sign into your College or Unis intranet system. Once you've signed up they have online codes for discounts in loads of fashion stores such as ASOS, GAP and Hollister as well as for things such as Spotify and the Apple store. I got my current MacBook Pro through the UNiDAYS website and it costs me £850 opposed to the £999rrp. They occasionally do in-store discounts for some shops such as H&M where you simply show the cashier the app on your phone and they will apply the discount for you.

An NUS Extra card works in a similar way the UNiDAYS website but you get a physical card which you are able to use in stores as well as online. An NUS Extra card will set you back about £12 for the year. They do discounts such as 5% off at Amazon and 10% off your weekly shop at the Co-Op. Whilst I think an NUS Extra card is beneficial, I personally don't have one as most of the shops I would use my NUS Card at also accept my University student ID to receive the same discounts.

There are many more student discount cards and schemes available not to mention that many stores do their own independent concessions, for example Vodafone offer 10% off selected price plans. If your a student its also worth asking if the company you're purchasing from offers a student concession or discount you'd be surprised how many do!
Another tip is this: before you buy ANYTHING online just do a quick google search for promo codes for that specific store, it only takes a few seconds and you can often come across discount codes entitling you to money off your purchase or free delivery. Last winter I found a promo code that got me 25% off a coat from BooHoo.

P.S.: Click the header to be taken directly to the Discounts Website :)
